Amsterdammertje 2.0
Speculative Design (2018)

A speculative proposal for a section of canal in Amsterdam, introducing new technologies to reduce excessive tourists from the city through the manipulation of environmental conditions – including surveillance Amsterdammertje, and  lamp-posts which produces rain when triggered by the sensors. Closely related to the ‘Living Lab’ technologies currently being trialed in Eindhoven in which the municipality collaborates with privately owned tech companies to collect data in public space, this project sought to critique the invasive nature ‘smart city’ technology which pervades contemporary urban develipment, while posing the moral questions of the acceptability of  algorithmically excluding certain types of behaviour from public space.
